Vox: All life on Earth, in one staggering chart
A sweeping new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences finds, in a census sorting all the life on Earth by weight (measured in gigatons of carbon, the signature element of life on Earth), humans make up less than 1 percent of life. So, using the new data in PNAS, they tried to visualize the weight of all life on Earth to get a sense of the scale of it all.
